Positive Material Identification

Positive Material Inspection

As a result of a series of accidents resulting from material mix-ups, many companies have instituted stringent Positive Material Identification programs.

Industry organization has also worked to develop guidelines to assure that the nominal compositions of all alloy components in a process system are consistent with design specification.

Inspection Consultants Limited are specialists in testing materials for a range of imperfections and defects – obviously this is vital to do where pipe work, vessels or machinery is subject to great pressure or continual wear, for example. We have various types of equipment at our disposal to be able to offer a complete testing service. We use industrial X ray equipment such as Clandons Metascope.

This is used particularly in the field of Positive Material Identification. Positive Material Identification (or PMI) is a pretty specialized method of non-destructive testing. It is used particularly to grade alloys and carbon steels. It is used primarily for materials such as stainless steel, where quality is really important.

This is particularly important where the correct grade of material is critical for a particular capital installation or project where the use of the material is being stretched to the limits.

We use the latest x-ray fluorescence analysers which is one of the methods for Positive Material Identification, and low level radiation is fired at the material and the energy levels reflected back from each element is measured, so identifying the alloy elements.
